JVS Succeeds with New Child Care Program Since July, 2006, JVS has administered the Basic Sliding Fee Childcare Assistance Program through a grant from Hennepin County. In this valuable program JVS works with over 300 families providing financial assistance to qualifying families who use registered childcare providers. Leah Burtzlaff, just appointed Case Manager for the program, works directly with families to help them ensure quality, affordable, accessible childcare. Caalynn Schiro, JVS Programs Manager says, “I am so proud that we are able to be a strong proponent in Minneapolis for the health and safety of children. “ < Back JVS recognizes that quality, affordable, accessible childcare is necessary for parents to achieve self-sufficiency through employment. Through this program children will benefit from quality child-care experiences, which improve early-childhood learning, a key factor in later school success. For more information, contact Caalynn Schiro, Basic Sliding Fee Childcare Assistance Program Manager, at 952-417-2182 or cschiro@jvsmn.org. JVS is honored to be a recipient of an RBC Dain Rauscher foundation grant that will provide employment support going beyond JVS' traditional funding resources. JVS looks forward to a partnership with RBC Dain Rauscher that combines the security and investment firms' community interests and JVS' services. Potentially, this grant could allow JVS program participants additional time to work on job-seeking skills, job-placement or the opportunity to meet with a JVS counselor after finding a job to ensure employment success. The Minneapolis Employment and Training Program (METP) awarded JVS a grant to assist people with career counseling and to recruit adults in Minneapolis for jobs in high-growth, high-demand fields, such as construction, healthcare, and high-tech manufacturing. Beginning July 1, 2006, JVS will offer career assessments to identify strong candidates that will be referred to the Individual Referral Program (IRP) in Minneapolis. IRP-accepted candidates receive tuition or training-cost assistance. JVS Minneapolis staff will also work closely with program participants to seek additional financial aid programs, such as PELL grants and student loans. JVS' goal for the year is to refer 50 adults who will then be accepted by the IRP. IAJVS Hosts Annual Conference in Minneapolis, May 21-23, 2006 Each year JVS agency staff from around the United States, Canada, Israel and Argentina, join together to strategize about key vocational issues and concerns. This year, JVS Minneapolis is honored to host this educational event. Keynote speaker Art Rolnick, Senior Vice-President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, was chosen as the 2005 Minnesotan of the Year by Minnesota Monthly magazine. Dr. Rolnick, an expert on public policy issues relating to finances and the economics of education, will discuss the demographic realities for people over 55. Other conference topics include generational issues in an aging world and social entreprenurism. A workshop on Training the Trainer, about employing people with disabilities, is underwritten by Bank of America. A highlight for conference attendees will be an evening dinner cruise aboard a luxury yacht on the Mississippi River. The boat tour of a lock and dam, sights of rustic cliffs, and a spectacular view of the Minneapolis skyline, is hosted by JFCS and supported by Wells Fargo Bank. Click here for photos of the event
Larry Greenbaum, Marc Meirovitz to Receive Awards Larry Greenbaum, JVS Director, will receive the Bernie Rosenthal Executive Directors Award, and Marc Meirovitz, JFCS Endowment Chair, will receive the Samuel S. Greenberg Leadership Award at the annual Conference of the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services (IAJVS) in May. “It’s a great pleasure to be a recipient of this award,” Larry said. “The award epitomizes the qualities of leadership and excellence that go into directing and leading a JVS organization.” “I am deeply and warmly appreciative of the honor,” Marc said. “It is the work of the agency, however, that is most important. My passion for the Vocational Services Division of JFCS is that its programs empower self-sufficiency, which is the highest form of charity. That to me is very important. < Back Minneapolis - April 18, 2006 - CARF announced that JVS, a division of Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Minneapolis, has been re-accredited for a period of three years. The latest accreditation is the 8th consecutive Three-Year Accreditation outcome that the international accrediting commission has awarded to JVS. Accreditation assures people with disabilities that JVS provides the highest-quality services. This distinction represents the maximum level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the standards established by CARF. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation outcome has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors, during on an on-site visit, that its programs and services are measurable, accountable and fulfill the goals of each person served. JVS is a nonprofit vocational agency with offices in Minnetonka and Minneapolis. It has provided vocational rehabilitation services since 1958. CARF, an independent, not-for-profit accrediting body, promotes quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. For additional information, contact Cindy Uran, Vocational Rehabilitation and Supported Employment Programs Coordinator, at (952) 417-2119 or email curan@jvsmn.org. At the end of April, JVS received a $3,000 grant from the RBC Dain Rauscher Foundation. Sue Wallace also received notice from Allianz Life Corporate Giving Program that JVS received a $2,500 grant. These grants are designated for employment and career development services to low income individuals who do not receive public assistance. On October 1, JVS was awarded 31 additional program slots in the successful Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). JVS, along with East Side Neighborhood Services, manages the entire SCSEP program for all of Hennepin County. JVS continues to look for older adults who meet minimum income requirements and want training for today’s workforce. JVS also continues to seek non-profit agencies as well as schools, libraries and government offices to serve as host sites. In exchange for training these older workers, all host sites will enjoy the benefits of extra staff and the potential for hiring trained new workers.
